Ok, I will confess,, this article is about one provider in particular, World Nomads. I will explain later why I have chosen his company, and what makes their product unique
OK, for Digital Nomads, there are a number of issues with many travel insurance providers....
POLICIES RARELY LAST BEYOND 18 MONTHS
If you are find that your trip is going to be less than 18 months then no worries. Simply buy from any travel insurance provider that will cover the length of your trip. World Nomads will cover you up to 18 months, but if you are starting from your home country, they will probably not be the cheapest. For instance, one year's cover with Worldnomads for me in Aisa would be around £380 GBP. I have used other providers, such as the ones listed on this travel insurance comparison site, and have paid half that.
YOU HAVE TO BUY THE POLICY WHILE YOU IN ARE IN YOUR HOME COUNTRY
If you have left your own country, you will be restricted to providers, such as World Nomads. They allow you to buy the policy wherever you are, and after you have started your trip. There is a cooling off period, so you can't log in and buy it after an accident.
IN SOME CASES YOU WILL HAVE TO LIVE SIX MONTHS IN YOUR RESIDENT COUNTRY BEFORE BUYING
This is a bit of travel insurance small print that is widely unknown. Even though I consider myself an expert in this area, I was unaware that some travel insurance providers insist on this. Not being aware could be a very costly mistake. Always check the small print!
So Worldnomads appear to be a solution for long term travellers and digital nomads, however, I would like to point out some of their small print, as of March 2016. Please be aware their small print can and will change, so always check their official small print before buying.
We do not cover any pre-existing medical conditions which affect you, the people travelling or other people upon whose health your trip depends. You are advised to read the definition of pre-existing medical conditions. You can still take out this travel insurance with a pre-existing medical condition, but we won't cover any claim made as a result of this condition.
If you need a pre-existing issue covered then you'll probably have to buy expensive worldwide health insurance. You can expect this to be way more expensive than travel insurance, provders include Insignia and Bupa Internation.
As a digital nomad, you will be covered while you are working, as it's no manual work. Here is their definition of non manual work...
Any professional, clerical or administrative work , working as a classroom teacher, classroom assistant, au pair, nanny or child minder or retail, bar and hospitality work involving light duties only.
With World Nomads you can extend your travel cover while overseas, up to 18 months. What happens after 18 months? Well the truth is that I have scoured their site and cannot find any information except that in most cases you should be able to extend the cover by 12 months, so in theory, you should be able to cover yourself for 30 months, that's two and a hlaf years.
What about after 30 months? Well I am not sure if World Nomads would cover you under their own policies. It might be better to go home, give your family a nice surprise visit, and buy some other travel insurance before heading off again!.
Thank you for visiting Working Nomad.
